Once upon a time, there lived a daughter of a king (a princess) in West Java which was called Dayang Sumbi. She has a son named Sangkuriang. The child was very fond of hunting in the forest. Each hunt, he always accompanied by his beloved dog named Tumang. Actually, Tumang was an incarnation of the god, and also Sangkuriang’s biological father, but Sangkuriang doesn’t know about it and his mother deliberately hid it from him.

One day, as usual Sangkuriang went to the forest to hunt. After he arrived at the forest, Sangkuriang started looking for prey. He saw there was a bird who was perched on a branch, then without thinking too long Sangkuriang shot it directly, and right on target. Sangkuriang then asked Tumang to chase his preyed but then Tumang was silent and unwilling to follow Sangkuriang’s ordered. Because very irritated with Tumang, so Sangkuriang extruded Tumang and forbade him to go back home with him again.

When they arrived home, Sangkuriang narrated the incident to his mother. After she heard the story from her son, Dayang Sumbi was very angry. She took a spoon, and she hit Sangkuriang’s head. Because felt disappointed with his mother’s treatment, then Sangkuriang decided to go wandering, and left his home.

After that incident, Dayang Sumbi was very remorseful. She pray everyday, and requested that someday she could meet her child again. Because of the seriousness of Dayang Sumbi’s prayed, so god’s granted her a gift of eternal beauty and youth forever.

After many years of wandering, eventually Sangkuriang intended to go back home to his hometown. When he arrived there, he was very shocked, because his hometown had completely changed. Sangkuriang’s pleasure was growing when the moment he met a very beautiful woman in the middle of the road, which was no other than Dayang Sumbi. Because charmed with the woman’s beauty, so Sangkuriang immediately proposed to her. When all was said and done, Sangkuriang’s proposal was accepted by Dayang Sumbi, agreed that they will get married in the near future. Some day, Sangkuriang asked his future wife’s permission to go hunting in the forest. Before leaving, he asked Dayang Sumbi to tighten and smoothed his headband. Dayang Sumbi was so surprised, because when she smoothen Sangkuriang’s headband, she saw that there was a scarred. The scarred was similar to her own child’s scarred. After she asked Sangkuriang about the cause of his scarred, Dayang Sumbi was even more startled, because evidently that her future husband was her own child.

Dayang Sumbi was very confused, because it was impossible that she marry her own child. After Sangkuriang returned from hunting, Dayang Sumbi tried to talk to Sangkuriang, so that Sangkuriang cancelled their wedding plan. Sangkuriang wasn’t agreed with Dayang Sumbi’s demand, and he only considered it as a wind alone.

Everyday Dayang Sumbi thought how to make their wedding never ever happened. After thinking hard, at the end Dayang Sumbi found the best way. She submitted two requirements to Sangkuriang. If Sangkuriang could meet those two requirements, then Dayang Sumbi was willing to be his wife, but instead, if failed then the wedding will be cancel. The first request was that Dayang Sumbi wanted that the Citarum river was be dammed. And the second one was that she asked Sangkuriang to make a huge canoe to cross the river. Both of those things must be done before dawn.

Sangkuriang agreed with the two of Dayang Sumbi’s request, and promised to finish it before dawn. With his magic, Sangkuriang then exerting all of his jinn friends to help him to finish his duties. Stealthy, Dayang Sumbi peeked into Sangkuriang’s work. She was amazed, because Sangkuriang almost finished all of the request that was given by Dayang Sumbi and have to finish it before dawn.

Dayang Sumbi then asked the local communitie’s help to roll the red silk clothes in the east of the town. When Sangkuriang saw the redness in the east of the town, he thought that the day was almost dawn. Sangkuriang stopped his worked straightaway and felt that he was unable to meet the requirements which had been filed by Dayang Sumbi.

With a sense of annoyance and disappointment, Sangkuriang then broke through the dammed which he had made by himself. Because the dammed had been broken, so there was flooding and the whole town was submerged with water. Sangkuriang also kicked the huge canoe which he had made. The canoe was flew and fell on one’s face, later it became a mountain which was called Tangkuban Perahu.

REOG PONOROGO

Dewi Senggalangit, the King’s daughter looked extremely sorrowful. She was confused choosing who will be the right one to be her husband. Meanwhile, dozens of kings were waiting for an assurance from Dewi Senggalangit.

That evening, there were two suitors arrived again. They were Patih Iderkala and Patih Bujang Ganong (Patih/Governor). Patih Iderkala proposed to Dewi Senggalangit in place of King Singabarong of Ladoya kingdom, Blitar. Patih Bujang Ganong came to Dewi Senggalangit on behalf of King Kelana Suwandana of Wengker kingdom, Ponorogo.

“This time, you must decide your preference. Those two kings were very powerful. They will invade us if you humiliate them,” advised Dewi Sanggalangit’s father.

“Please, give me ten days father, so that I can consider it wisely,” answered Dewi Senggalangit.

“Alright. Father will pass your promise to the kings, your suitors,” said Dewi Senggalangit’s father with relieved.

Dewi Senggalangit went into her room. She meditated solemnly. When the ten days had passed, Dewi Senggalangit obtained a guidance from the god. She then came to her father.

“How’s my child? Who’s your choice?” Asked Dewi Senggalangit’s father a little bit tensely.

“I couldn’t decide right now, father because I have some conditions for my husband to be,” answered Dewi Senggalangit.

“Mention your condition quickly!” exclaimed Dewi senggalangit’s father curiously.

“Firstly, my husband to be must prepare 144 twins horses which wiill be ridden by handsome young men.
Secondly, he must bring a double-headed animal.
Thirdly, he must be able to deliver a spectacular entertainment which has never been view by people,” explained Dewi Senggalangit.

“Hmmm, your request were very stranged, Senggalangit. However, I will pass it to them.” said Dewi Senggalangit’s father.

“Thank you, father.”

The King of Kediri gathered all of Dewi Senggalangit’s suitors at the royal audience hall. He conveyed his daughter’s wishes. The kings appeared hopeless because they were feeling that they won't be able to fulfill the conditions that Dewi Senggalangit had asked. Nonetheless, it was not like that with Patih Iderkala and Patih Bujang Ganong.

Patih Iderkala quickly went back to Blitar. Then, he immediately came to the King Singaborang. King Singabarong was very powerful. His countenance was very scary. He was a human with a tiger faced.

On King Singabarong’s shoulder perched a peacock. The beautiful animal was previously own by Patih Iderkala. Then, that magic bird was given to the King Singabarong as a gift by Patih Iderkala, because King Singabarong has been kind enough to appoint him as a governor in Lodaya kingdom.

On the contrary, King Singabarong was very lucky to get the peacock. Besides magical, the bird also clever enough to look for head lice on the king’s hair which had a tiger head.

Yes, loads of lice! This was an ailment which made King Singabarong was very disturbed. However because of the peacock who pecking lice on his hair, King Singabarong’s suffering became rather light. His head felt like got some massage when the bird was pecking lice on his hair.

“Was my proposal has been accepted, Iderkala?” asked King Singabarong.

“Dewi Senggalangit’s suitors were so many, Majesty. She requested three conditions for her husband to be,” informed Patih Iderkala. Then Patih Iderkala specified the three conditions.

“From all of Dewi Senggalangit’s suitors, who is my toughest competitors?”asked presumptuous King Singabarong.

“King Kelana Suwandana of Wengker kingdom, Majesty. He was known to be miraculously magical and powerful!” answered Patih Indrakala.

“Hmmm, Kelana Suwandana was very powerful. Have you planned a strategy how to beat him?” asked King Singabarong inquisitively.

“I will deploy some spies to Wengker kingdom. If King Kelana Suwandana succeeded in fulfilling the three requirements. I will snatch it away in the middle of the road,” explained Patih Iderkala cunningly.

“Excellent! Do your strategy, Iderkala!” said King Singabarong excitedly.

Patih Iderkala said farewell. He soon acted. He and some guards were disguised as traders who move around. Then, they departed to Wengker kingdom.

Meanwhile, King Kelana Suwandana was preparing for himself. He was helped by Patih Bujang Ganong who was very loyal. Because of his loyalty, one hundred and forty four (144) twins horses were prepared to be offer to Dewi Senggalangit.

This things were immediately known to Patih Iderkala. “King Kelana Suwandana was obviously very powerful!” murmured Patih Iderkala impressed.

Unfortunately, two of Patih Iderkala’s guards were got caught. Lodra and Ardawalika were taken to face King Kelana Suwandana. The King repeatedly asked the two Lodaya’s kingdom messengers. However, they were still silenced.

“Whip them! Don’t stop before they willing to admit who they were!” commanded King Kelana Suwandana to executioner.

Lodra and Ardawalika were miserabled. However, They still don’t want to admit. After a long time, Ardawalika screamed, “Stop! I will confess!”

“Said quickly who are you?” yelled the executioner.

“Ardawalika, please don’t! You are a true guard, aren’t you?” persuaded Lodra reminded him.

“I couldn’t stand it anymore Lodra, please forgive me!” replied Ardawalika. Then, he said to King Kelana Suwandana,” I came from Lodaya kingdom, Majesty!”

“Why did you spy on me?” asked King Kelana Suwandana.

“We were assigned to find out Majesty’s preparation on the Dewi Senggalangit’s proposal,” said Ardawalika.

“Only that?” snapped King Kelana Suwandana.

Ardawalika nodded. King Kelana Suwandana then shouted louder, “Executioner! Whip him until he confess again.

“Wait...! We were also assigned to take away Excellency’s twins horses as well as two headed animals. Oh, I have told everything. Please, freed me, Majesty...!” begged Ardawalika.

“What a pity, I couldn’t grant your wishes, Ardawalika. I resented your behaviour. You’re a despicable coward. Bah! I am disgusted seeing you!” then King Kelana Suwandana said to the executioner,” jail him for life!”.

King Kelana Suwandana then approached Lodra. “I was impressed with your steadiness. I will freed you eventhough you’re my enemy!”.

“Thank you, Majesty!” answered Lodra happily. Then, he rushed home to Blitar.

Apparently, Patih Iderkala was also unlucky. He was blocked by Patih Bujang Ganong in the border of the Wengker kingdom. Both of the Patihs were facing each other. They were then fighting again one another. In the fight, Patih Iderkala was killed by Patih Bujang Ganong’s keris (its an asymmetrical dagger with distinctive blade-patterning achieved through alternating laminations of iron and nickelous iron).

Meanwhile, King Singabarong couldn’t wait for the arrival of the Patih Iderkala. Then he went to the Wengker kingdom. He was so angry when he found Patih Iderkala’s corpse. Then, he challenged Patih Bujan Ganong, “Bastard! You had killed my Patih! Come on, now fight me, Bujang Ganong!”

The fight between King Singabarong and Patih Bujang Ganong were taking place unevenly. King Singabarong was more powerful than Patih Bujang Ganong. When Patih Bujang Ganong almost defeated, all of a sudden King Kelana Suwandana appeared there.

“Retreat, Bujang Ganong! He was not your match!” exclaimed King Kelana Suwandana. Then, King Kelana Suwanda said angrily, “ You have no shame, Singabarong! You sent your people to steal my things, Bah! Walk over my corpse first before you execute your intention!”

“Son of a bitch...! shouted King Singabarong with an angry face. “Let’s us fight!”

The two kings were fighting to be the strongest. After some several paces, King Singabarong looked rather slow in his movements. That was because of the lice in his head who were started to act, therefore he couldn’t concentrate on his mind.

“Fucking lice! It’s better that I run away than to be beaten by Kelana Suwandana!”cursed King Singabarong. Then, as quick as lightning he rode his horse away back to Blitar.

“Cowardice! I will finish your life if we had a chance to fight again!” yelled King Kelana Suwandana swearing. Then he rode his horse and quietly following King Singabarong to Blitar.

When he arrived in the palace, King Singabarong ordered the peacock to look for the lices on his hair.

“Come on! Come on! Chanted King Singabarong comfortably. All of a sudden shadows appeared behind King Singabarong. It turned out to be King Kelana Suwandana.

“Hmmm, perhaps this double-headed animals was the one wanted by Dewi Senggalangit,” mumbled King Kelana Suwandana when he saw that peacock was pecking lices on the King Singabarong’s hair.

King Kelana Suwandana meditated. He prayed for strenght from god. “Be you a two headed animal, Singabarong!” cursed King Kelana Suwandana.

Suddenly, the peacock’s body attached to the King Singabarong’s shoulder, so therefore the human with the tiger head was like having double-headed. His other head was the peacock’s head.

“Disrespectful! I will kill you...! shrieked King Singabarong angrily. He attacked King Kelana Suwandana. Skillfully King Kelana Suwandana fend it off. Then, he drew his powerful whip. “Daar...daarr...!” the whip beaten up King Singabarong’s body until he was rolling on the ground.

Magic! All over King Singabarong’s body transformed into animal. Double-headed animal.

A few days later, King Kelana Suwandana went to Kediri kingdom. He wanted to propose to Dewi Senggalangit. Long concoyed were seen behind his horse. One hundred and forty-four twins horses ridden by handsome young men. There were also seen a group of dancers and a double-headed animal which no other than the incarnation of the King Singabarong.

King Kelana Suwandana was welcomed with festive by all of the Kediri’s citizen. Then, he got married to Dewi Senggalangit. To celebrate the wedding, they hold dances and other hornet in Kediri’s public square. The entertainment then known as REOG. Because reog was originally from Ponorogo, so the reog was called REOG PONOROGO.
