THE LEGEND OF BROMO MOUNTAIN–TENGGER TRIBE (JAWA TIMUR)
Recounted in the ancient time, there lived a young couple of husband and
wife in a hamlet. All of a sudden the wife got pregnant and gave birth to a
daughter. Oddly enough, when the baby girl was born she wasn’t cried, so her
parents gave her a name: Roro Anteng (Roro is usually the title of King’s son
or daughter), which means calm or quiet female.
The time has passed until Roro Anteng grown to be a beautiful young girl. Her beauty was very famous among the youth at that time. No exception with a powerful man named Kiai Bima. Armed with only his mightiness, Kiai Bima came to Roro Anteng to propose to her accompanied by the threat. The proposal must be accepted, if not he will make her hamlet perish.
As a matter of fact Roro Anteng felt unwilling to accept the proposal. Yet, she was forced to accept it in order to safe her hamlet. And she has a planned to thwart the proposal. Yes, Roro Anteng gave a requirement to Kiai Bima if he wants his proposal to be accepted, so he must make a lake within one night.
Because doesn’t want to lose Roro Anteng, Kiai Bima agreed to it. Armed only with coconut shell, Kiai Bima started to dredge the soil to make it a lake. In a short time, the lake already looked like almost completed. Roro Anteng who has been scheming then asked those hamlets citizen to bang the pestle so that the day had heard like morning and the chock started crowning.
Kiai Bima soon realized that he doesn’t successfully complete Roro Anteng’s challenged. He then couldn’t forced his proposal. His grieved heart instantaneously slammed the coconut shell which he was holding, then left it. His former coconut shell then became Batok Mountain which located next to Mountain Bromo. While, his former dug became Segara Wedi (sea of sand) which can be seen until today.
Roro Anteng finally met Joko Seger and got married. For many years of marriage, they haven’t been given any child. At the end of the day, Joko Seger prayed to God if endowed with children, he was willing to sacrifice his children.
Joko Seger’s prayer was granted. Roro Anteng and Joko Seger had been endowed with some children. Time has passed until Joko Seger forgotten about his past prayer’s term. When he was sleeping, Joko Seger got a whispered to fulfill his promised.
In reality Joko Seger doesn’t willing to sacrifice one of his children. On the other hand, because if it’s not obeyed there will be disaster and moreover that was his own promised, so he passed it on to his children. One of Joko Seger and Roro Anteng’s children was willing to be sacrificed.
The D day has arrived. Joko Seger’s family went towards the Mountain Bromo while bringing miscellaneous crops for offerings. One of Joko Seger’s child who will be sacrifice has also been prepared. Together with the offerings, the child plunged down to Mountain Bromo's crater.
After the promised had been carried out, Joko Seger’s family lived happily around Mountain Bromo area. Their descendant called themselves as Suku Tengger (Tengger Tribe) – which was originated from the named of Roro Anteng and Joko Seger.
The ceremony of the sacrifice of their children, can still be seen up to now. On the full moon of 14 or 15 of Kasodo month (Javanese calendar) they performed the Kasodo ceremony, where there was the process of pitching offerings to the Mountain Bromo's crater.
