THE LEGEND OF BANYUWANGI (SRI TANJUNG VERSION)
Reputedly, a long time ago in the tip of East Java whose nature were so beautiful was ruled by a king named Prabu Sulahkromo. In running his government he got a helped from his brave, wise and handsome Patih named Patih Sidopekso. Patih Sidopekso's wife whose named was Sri Tanjung was very good-looking, polished and soft-spoken, thereby made the king crazy about her. In order to achieve his desire to persuade and seduce Sri Tanjung then comes his sly wit by commanding Patih Sidopekso to run errands which was impossible that it could be achieve by an ordinary person.
Then, the Patih went to do the king's decreed firmly and bravely without any suspicion. After Patih Sidopekso left the palace, Prabu Sulahkromo did all the trickeries; from indecent act by seducing to defaming Sri Tanjung. Yet, the king's love had never been returned by Sri Tanjung and Sri Tanjung remained firmed with her commitment, as a wife who always pray for her husband. The king's heart was furious and smoldering heat when his love was rejected by Sri Tanjung.
When Patih Sidopekso returned from his mission, he went to the king directly. The king's foul sense appeared, slandering Sri Tanjung by stating that after the Patih went to execute the king's command and left the palace, Sri Tanjung came and seduced as well as acted oblique with the king.
Without thinking too long, with fury and unwarranted allegation, Patih Sidopekso went straight away to meet Sri Tanjung.
Sri Tanjung's innocent and honest confession made Patih Sidopekso's heart getting hotter from restraining anger and even with his enraged the Patih threatened to kill his devoted wife. He dragged Sri Tanjung to the bank of the river which was dirty and murky. However, before Patih Sidopekso kill Sri Tanjung, she has a final request from her husband, as evidence of honesty, chastity and fidelity she was willing to be killed and asked that her body to be plunged into the dirty river, if her blood made the river water becomes foul then she had cheated on him, but if the river water becomes aromatic then she had done nothing wrong.
Patih Sidopekso was no longer able to resist himself, he immediately thrusted his keris (dagger) into Sri Tanjung's chest. The blood splattered from Sri Tanjung's body and died instantly. Sri Tanjung corpse was immediately plunged into the river and the dirty river gradually becomes clear like crystal as well as spreading fragrance, aromatic fragrant. Patih Sidopekso staggered, fell and he became absent-minded, without he realized it, he screamed "Banyu (water)... wangi (aromatic)... Banyu (water)... wangi (aromatic)... .. Banyuwangi was born as a proof of wife's love to her husband.
